2017 Reunion Results

(Posted August 28th, 2017)

The 2017 Merrill’s Marauders Proud Descendants Reunion was held at the United States Military Academy at West Point on Friday, August 4th. The 71st Reunion was the first of it’s kind after the Association voted to deformalize the events at last years reunion. Over 50 Proud Descendants and friends were in attendance, as well as two original Marauders and Ranger Hall of Famers: Gilbert “Gil” Howland, and MMPD Historian, Robert “Bob” Passanisi.

Attendees gathered at the West Point Visitor’s Center and boarded a bus to the Old Cadet Chapel for a brief memorial ceremony, followed by wreath-laying at the graves of General Merrill and General Stillwell. The wreaths were placed by our two attending Marauders, Gil and Bob, as well as Gil’s son, Bob Howland, and Bob’s son-in-law, Barry Maltese, by their sides. The Ceremony Order was as follows:

1055 Organist plays patriotic music until attendees are seated
1100 WP Rep Sherman Fleek Orders Posting of Colors
WP Rep Introduces Chaplain COL Pawlikowski
1105 Chaplain does benediction
1110 West Point Rep Sherman Fleek does welcome and short talk on the Merrill’s Marauders
1120 Marauder Reps do short talk (Marauder Gil Howland, Marauder Bob Passanisi, MMPD President Bob Menta)
WP Rep Orders Retire Colors
Colors move to grave site
Wreaths are placed at grave sites
Fire volley
Play Taps
WP Rep Orders Retire Colors
1200 That concludes the ceremony.

After our two attending Marauders placed wreaths at General Merrill’s and General Stillwell’s graves, the group boarded the bus again and headed to the Thayer Hotel for lunch in MacArthur’s Riverview Restaurant. Some brief remarks were made regarding progress on the Congressional Gold Medal campaign, and information and instructions for contacting Congresspeople were handed out to attendees. The group then boarded the bus again at about 1:30 for a two-hour tour of the grounds, including (the new) Cadet Chapel, Trophy Point, and more.

Next year: Because of the discontinuation of the formal banquet-style reunions as we knew them, Marauders, descendants, and friends are encouraged to arrange local gatherings of their own accord. If doing so, please email burman.news@gmail.com so that we may promote your gathering to the rest of the Association. There are very preliminary talks about another informal annual reunion in either Chicago, New Orleans, Fort Riley, or Nashville. Please stay tuned to this website and the MMPD Facebook page for updates.

Thanks as always for your interest in and support of these brave men that made up the 5307th Composite Unit AKA Merrill’s Marauders.

Best,

Jaimie Newby

MMPD Vice President and WebMaster

71st Annual Merrill’s Marauders Reunion

(Posted January 20th, 2017)

Plans are in the works so mark your calendars!

The date has been set — August 4, 2017 a tour of West Point is being set up with a visit to General Frank Merrill’s Grave. The MM’s and the MMPD Assoc. who attend will lay a wreath at his grave.westpointhdr

Changes to Reunion Format: This is not an organized reunion as has been done in the past. Forthcoming in the new year we will send out airport and hotel listings in the West Point area. It will be up to everyone individually to get there and make accommodations. We will take a head count of who will attend to make proper arrangements for the tour and set a luncheon afterwards that everyone will chip in to pay for. This is the new format.  At the West Point meeting, if it goes well and everyone who attends agrees, we’ll pick a destination for 2018 and use the same format.

Hope to see many of you at West Point.  Proud Descendant Bob Howland is working very hard to set this up and I am grateful to him.

God Bless you all,

Bob Menta
